The male cardinal is very showy with his brilliant red plumage, bright orange bill, and jagged crest. The only other color is a small patch of black around the base of the bill. Nesting sites are anywhere thick vegetation is near an open area. The song of the Cardinal is a pleasant musical whistle-- a "birdee, birdee, birdee" or a "purty, purty, purty."
